Ten to twelve million Africans were enslaved between 1450 and 1870. About two million slaves died on the way to America because of little food and no hygiene. About 500,000 were transported to British North America . Africans were in Virginia as early as 1619 and were referred to as Christian Slaves. By 1775, these unwilling immigrants and there descendants were roughly 20 percent of the Colonial Population. Laws called Slave Codes kept Slaves from owning any property, testifying against whites in court, receiving an education, moving about freely, or meeting in large groups.
